I’ve had it on my do-list for several weeks now to write about Cuban coffee [or, cafe cubano]. Now that Margaret Menge has offered this flavorful piece on egullet.com, I don’t need to!
“…for coffee, find a window. Most of the real Cuban joints have windows on the sidewalk. There’s a dark-haired girl in the window who’ll take your order. It’s like a drive-through, but different. Because the girl’s in tight pants, not a uniform, and she’ll smile and maybe call you ‘mi amor’ and will take the time with your coffee. It’s not necessary that she be Cuban, and in fact, many of the Hispanics in Miami-Dade are now from Central America and South America. But it’s fairly important that the owners of the place be Cuban. Because then they respect the coffee.”
