Gillies Coffee… now with more bits!
I just have to break my self-imposed Silence of the LANs to note that Gillies coffee —the oldest continuously operated coffee company in these here United States— has just launched a new web site. [Woot!]
Don Schoenholt, Gillies’ proprietor, is a genuine coffeeman… having learned the trade at his papa’s knee. He’s also one of specialty coffee’s luminaries and a genuinely swell guy all ’round.
The web geek within finds it deeply satisfying that this grand old company is gettin’ thoroughly digitized. So go visit and buy something, already!

When I see you and Fortune pushing Gillies a lot I remember the 1 and only bag of Gillies I ever had, after a taste of it brewed went straight into the trash due to its lack of both aroma and taste.
When I complained about the quality to the supplier I was told that coffee was “a subjective appreciation”.
I guess Don may have my best interests at heart and history to back him up but I’m afraid it did not translate into the cup from that bag. Why would I try again, we already know that I don’t ‘appreciate’ in the right way? Call me insulted and pissed-off? Yes. Shame is that Don probably doesn’t even know this happened even though he ought to claim responsibility.
Love the history but sorry, did not translate into the cup.
