This is just so wrong…

I’m hugely appreciative of Grist and their take on issues relevant to the environment and sustainable living, but I have to draw the line somewhere. That line is here: Grist’s Guide to Meat-free Grilling.

I come from a cow-town. For me the very definition of a summer’s day involves a grill and many pounds of beef. (Better still, it involves a barbecue pit, and a large supply of beef brisket and pork ribs.) Meat… it’s what’s on the grill.I’m happy to grill veggies — even fruit — so long as it’s understood by all in attendance that these are accompaniments to the main dish, which will be meat.

As an antidote to Grist’s misguided efforts, allow me to present you with an alternative menu:

  • The Kansas City Barbecue Society
  • The Smoke Ring
  • Weber Grills
  • Paul Kirk’s Championship Barbecue (The Bible of BBQ)

Now get grillin’.

Green Mountain’s Gombe Reserve Gets Tasted

Folks from all over are commenting on Green Mountain’s Gombe Reserve, a coffee offered in partnership with the Jane Goodall Institute. Dr. Jane Goodall (and friend) My own notes were from a pre-production roast and — honestly — were at least as much about the process of producing the coffee and had little to do with the finished product… I haven’t taken the time to capture my own tasting notes of the roasts I have sampled since. But fair’s fair… I’ll present some of the other points of view I’ve seen of late, and then I’ll add my own thoughts to sum things up. (more…)

It’s been quiet around here lately.

About the lack of posts… is it because:

  1. I’ve been flirting with some other writing projects.
  2. I’ve been doing the conference thing. Again.
  3. I’ve been traveling. Again. And getting stuck in airports. Again.
  4. I’ve been nursing the cold I got from getting stuck in airports.
  5. I’ve got deadlines in the real world (ones that I can’t ignore!)
  6. All of the above.

The answer sort of reveals itself, huh? ;) Meanwhile, I’m back in the writer’s garret and will try — once again — to stay on task. If only that pesky raven would quit rapping, tapping at… No! Must stay on task. Must stay…

Happy Birthday, Bro.

Happy Birthday to my big brother, Donnie, who as best I can recall is now *exactly* 30 years older than he was when this exceptionally attractive photo was taken. (Nice shot, Dad.)
