The scene you have in your head is just about right. The fire department did much more damage than the fire ever would have.

The squirrels survived. The chimney did not.

I'm reminded of a line from Steve Martin's Roxanne... his take on Cyrano (with Daryl Hannah, et al.) and a favorite movie of mine:

My dream - and I hope you don't find this too crazy - is that I would like the people of this community to feel that if, God forbid, there were a fire, calling the fire department would actually be a wise thing to do.

Second on the flue-checking thing.

Ever since the “nest of squirrels” incident and the subsequent “calling of the volunteer fire department” incident, we check the chimney top to bottom every year before we set the first fire.
